Sehmani's Story

Sehmani believes in sharing transparent passion stories and encourages women to have a powerful voice as another woman may be listening.

Her professional journey began at 21 years old, when she started out as legal assistant at a law firm. A single mother of a 2-year old and living on a low-income, she did not see very many opportunities in front of her. Sehmani did not want to become a statistic and was determined to make a better life for her and her child. Pushing forward, working full-time jobs and obtaining an education at the same time, was no easy feat. She never gave up on her dream to receive an education that propelled her into the legal space.

Throughout Sehmani's journey, she hosted and moderated events in the creative space and gathered high-profiled community members to speak up on issues such as rehabilitation programming and mentorship to Black youth and men in an annual event series called 'It Was Written'. This event provided an opportunity for community members to gather at Toronto City Hall to discuss the important topics that effected the parole programming after extended incarceration.

Sehmani also hosted events for the creative community called 'The Artist Block' and 'The Confidence in You' for Toronto entrepreneurs while working towards her legal career goals.

Sehmani describes her journey as a 'non-conventional' one because, she did not see herself represented in the spaces she was working towards as a young Black female. "I want to inspire young Black women to step outside of the box the world puts us in", she says.

Sehmani decided that becoming a lawyer is truly what she wanted to accomplish and she rolled up her sleeves, obtained her Paralegal diploma and passed her P1 licensing exam against the odds. She believed a 19-year old mother would't possibly be able to get this far, because she wasn't seeing this representation in her community, however she proved the stigma wrong.

Sehmani is now running her full-service practice, a college professor and is obtaining her law-degree simultaneously and sits on the Ontario Association of Black Paralegals board as the Law Clerk Committee Chair. She also sits on the board for Dress for Success Jamaica, as the Empower Her program coordinator and providing expertise on opportunities of working from home and navigating the job market in the digital space. Sehmani's focus is to support single-parents and ensuring there are resources provided to the community to navigate the legal space with a genuine approach and with integrity. She loves what she does, and although her journey was not a typical one, she knows she was born to run her own practice and support the community along the way. Breaking barriers set in front of her and shaking up the normative stigmas, Sehmani is on her way to representing young female Black entrepreneurs in a unique way.

Meet Sherina Gardner (she/her)
Licensed Paralegal

Sherina Gardner is a licensed paralegal and the founder of Your Advocate Legal Services.

Sherina’s journey into the legal field began during her high school years in one of Toronto's most challenging neighborhoods. Attending a school that served as a last resort for many students facing legal troubles or expulsion, Sherina found her passion for advocacy in her Canadian law class. Her drive to assist her community by providing access to legal resources became her calling.

In 2014, Sherina started her post-secondary education at Humber College in the Protection, Security, and Investigations program. However, she soon realized her true passion lay in the law and helping others navigate the legal system. In January 2022, she returned to Humber College, this time at the North Campus, where she successfully completed the Paralegal Education Program.

Sherina is committed to empowering her clients and providing effective legal solutions tailored to their needs. When she’s not advocating for others, she enjoys engaging in community-building initiatives and spending quality time with her family.

Sherina offers advocacy for the following services in the Greater Toronto area, Hamilton and Niagra regions:
